Why This Was Built

Bear the Fire was built on a simple conviction: a boy does not become a man on his own. And almost nothing left in our world is built for the job. It exists to give fathers back the rite of passage their sons were always meant to make.

It Started With One Father

That father is me. My name is Alan. I have one son, Mark.

I had a good father. We were close. We still are. I wanted that for Mark. I also wanted to hand him what was true and lasting. But as Mark reached the years when a boy should be growing into a man, I went looking for a way across, from boyhood to manhood. There was nothing. No clear bridge over the chasm. The stakes were too high to leave it to chance.

So I read everything I could find. Hundreds of books, thousands of pages. Some were ancient. Some were modern. None was a complete crossing. I studied how men have always made men: the oldest patterns, the rites beneath them. I built it as I went, year by year, for four years.

It ended in Ireland. Mark and I followed ancient Christian pilgrim trails a hundred and thirty-one miles across the country. As we walked, we went back over all four years: every virtue, every truth, every book, everything I had spent those years forming in him. The last twenty-five miles took us to the top of Croagh Patrick. There, I gave him a father’s blessing. And I declared him a man.

I did not build this only for Mark. Two years in, I knew it could not stay with me. And fathers kept asking. When they heard what I was doing, the same words: Show me how to do this with my son. So I gave it a form any father could lead. Including you.

What We Believe

Here is what we know to be true.

Men have lost their way. Our culture is crumbling as a result.

When the father steps up and leads, the son will follow.

When we call men up and show them the way, we strengthen generations and restore the culture.

Your Turn

You have been waiting for someone to hand you what you need to lead your son into manhood. The waiting is over. It is here. It was made for you to lead.
